Materials at Milan Design Week
For the first time since the pandemic, Milan Design Week will take place from 7 to 12 June 2022. Meet us at Certosa Initiative, with our exhibition Material Mingling Milan.
Material Mingling Milan
At Certosa Initiative, MaterialDistrict will have its own exhibition, where we show 120 innovative and sustainable materials, especially selected for Milan Design Week. Because everything within spatial design is made of materials, there is a lot to gain in this field by switching to sustainable materials. Focusing on three main areas of sustainability (Circularity, Energy Transition, and Wellbeing), MaterialDistrict’s exhibition Material Mingling Milan shows various materials made of what is generally regarded as waste, made of renewable sources, and/or are optimised for recycling at the end of life, while also celebrating that we can mingle again to experience the materials with all the senses. Find out more here.
Certosa Initiative
The Certosa Initiative is organised by Dutch architectural studio Beyond Space and Organisation In Design, makers of Ventura Projects. In addition to MaterialDistrict’s own exhibition, more material inspiration can be found there. Fields, for instance, shows acoustic solutions made of felt, while Koest opts for PET felt and wooden dovetail slots and bamboo mounting elements for sound absorption. Abigail Kuohn shows biobased alternatives to traditional plastics, while Ecopixel displays its recycled plastics. Studio RDD uses recycled single-use facemasks as filler material, as Tobia Zambotti and Aleksi Saastamoinen use this material in their puffer jacket. More fashion can be found at Svartbysvart, which teamed up with French artist Minuit to create a series of wearable items made from fishing equipment waste. Envisions shows applications for a yarn made of recycled textile developed by Brain of Materials and partners. Jord Lindelauf shows and aluminium stool and Jelle Havenkort a bench of steamed wood. Finally, there are rugs on display, ones inspired by mushrooms by Studio Lizan Freijsen and flatweave ones by Huqrugs. View all projects at Certosa Initiative here.
