Storefront made of recycled bricks upcycles 1,600 kg of waste
Dutch company StoneCycling creates bricks from construction waste. With their latest project, the storefront and fitting rooms of a store of fashion brand COS in Luxembourg, they upcycled 1,620 kilograms (3,570 pounds) of debris.
Construction and demolition waste is one of the biggest waste streams in the world. In Europe, this accounts for approximately 30 per cent of all the waste generated, a number that is even higher in the US and China. If reused, this debris is usually downcycled, like used as fill under roadbeds, but most of it ends up in a landfill.
StoneCycling was founded in 2013, seeing it as its mission to come up with a new type of building material in which building debris is reused. The result was the so-called WasteBasedBrick, a range of bricks in a variety of colours.
Since its foundation, StoneCycling has had projects around the world, and the COS store in Luxembourg is the latest. For the store, StoneCycling produced both full bricks, brick slips and corner elements of their Mushroom, a grey brick. In total, 1,620 kilograms of construction waste was upcycled into the project.
