Studio Wynd: Using carbon fibres in furniture

With their high tensile strength and low weight, carbon fibres are popular in aerospace, competition sports and the military. Studio Wynd uses carbon fibres to create high performance furniture pieces. One of their designs, the Black Wave coffee table, will be on display at Material Xperience (click here for a free entry ticket)!

Carbon fibres are about 5–10 micrometers in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. Carbon fibres have several advantages including high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion. To produce a carbon fibre, the carbon atoms are bonded together in crystals that are aligned parallel.

The designs by Studio Wynd, consisting of a table, a coffee table, a bench and a chair, express the contradictory characteristics of carbon fibre as a material, such as maximum strength versus minimum self-weight.

The Black Wave coffee table is the first item in the Black Wave series in which the beauty of organic curves are emphasised. The table is made from carbon fibre that is wound around a CNC milled mould using a robotic arm.

You can see the Black Wave coffee table at the Products pavilion at Material Xperience, 13-15 March 2018 in Rotterdam Ahoy, the Netherlands! Curious to see what other materials and products to expect? Click here for a preview!
