Transitions II: the second Baars & Bloemhoff exhibition for the Dutch Design Week
After the success of last year’s Transitions exhibition, Baars & Bloemhoff, a supplier in the Netherlands specialised in decorative sheet material, has announced to hold a second exhibition this year at the Dutch Design Week (22 – 30 October), called Transitions II. With the exhibition, Baars & Bloemhoff is consciously seeking to experiment and challenge chosen designers to investigate their sheet materials from an alternative perspective. The theme of DDW is ‘The making of’, so the focus of Transitions II will be on the making process.
The designers:
Design duo Daphna Laurens (Daphna Isaacs Burggraaf and Laurens Manders) has chosen to work with the material Forbo Desktop. In their project ‘Everything But the Desktop!’, they glued two sheets of the material together to make a two-coloured and double sided thick layer. With this, they designed amongst other things a chair and a lamp.
Paul Heijnen’s Unity Globe Light is a lampshade that consists of 1080 uniform sides. The shape is based on a dodecahedron, which is a polyhedron with twelve five sided flat faces. With this structure, made from Finsa Color MDF Negro 3mm, almost no residual waste remains after lasering the shape.
With her project Filter, Sabine Marcelis combines material and light. She used HI-MACS, which is a material made from natural minerals and pure acryl. It shows its qualities and beauty best when it is illuminated. Marcelis designed a chandelier and a wall lamp.
Studio rENs (Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsten) has chosen to use the colour black as main inspiration for their project, called BLACK. They studied all the black materials in Baars & Bloemhoff’s collection, which all have different properties and their own colour black (some are more grey, others lean towards brown). From these different materials (HI-MACS, Forbo, Abet Laminati, Sibu and Durapal), they designed blocks with which one can play like toy blocks.
David Derksen has decided to use wood veneer in his work. Not as a finish, but as the base material. Veneer is used to make something look like it is made of solid wood. It is lightweight and is very strong when it is pulled at, though not under pressure. Keeping this in mind, Derksen has used the material to make hanging structures called Grid, with additions such as LED lights and acoustic foam to give the structures different functions in the room.
For his project Inside-Out, Klaas Kuiken has used Finsa Greenpanel to make a cabinet and a buffet. Greenpanel consists of two MDF top layers of 4 mm with in between a honeycomb structure. By sawing through this, the structure becomes visible.
