NOOSA: A Fully Recyclable Biobased Textile Fibre for Circular Design

NOOSA is a material innovation company based in Brussels. It develops a recyclable, bio-based fibre designed for use in fashion, interior textiles, product design, and possibly automotive and home applications. The material can be recycled repeatedly without losing quality, supporting a truly circular lifecycle.

Recycling Through NOOCYCLE

Less than one percent of all textile fibres are recycled today. NOOSA responds to this problem with a patented process called NOOCYCLE. This chemical recycling technology separates the fibre from pigments, coatings, and other materials that typically prevent recycling. The process does not degrade the material, which makes it more effective than mechanical recycling methods that lower the quality of the fibre.

The recycling takes place in Belgium. It includes shredding, solubilising the fibre in a green solvent, and turning it into lactic acid. The result is a high-quality raw material that can be reused again and again. This method works for both pre- and post-consumer textile waste.

Performance Features for Design

The NOOSA fibre offers several useful properties. It is hypoallergenic and bacteriostatic, which makes it suitable for clothing and textiles worn close to the skin. The material is breathable and allows moisture to escape, helping to reduce odour and improve comfort. Its UV resistance and low flammability make it suitable for home textiles, children’s products, and outdoor use.

Because of these features, the fibre is valuable to designers who want both performance and sustainability. It fits well into standard manufacturing processes and does not require special machinery.

Product Types and Uses

The fibre is available as staple fibre, spun yarn, and filament yarn. Staple fibres work well for blends or fillings. Spun yarns are soft and manage moisture, making them ideal for everyday fabrics. Filament yarns are strong and smooth, suited for technical and lightweight applications.

Designers can use NOOSA in a wide range of products, including fashion, workwear, bedding, upholstery, and performance clothing. It can be adopted without major changes to existing production setups.

Environmental Benefits

A 2020 life cycle analysis showed that the fibre reduces CO₂ emissions by 30 percent and uses 50 percent less water than conventional cotton. It is made from non-GMO sugar crops and processed locally in Belgium, which reduces the carbon footprint.

The company promotes circular design principles. It encourages the use of mono-materials and easy-to-disassemble products. Through its certification programme, it supports transparency and helps brands meet EU circularity regulations.
