Design agency @BentuDesign created a stool made of recycled rubber shoe soles. Annually, around 20 billion pairs of shoes are created around the world, of which 95 per cent end up on the landfill. Typically, shoes are made of synthetic materials, including nylon, EVA, and TPU. The outer soles of shoes are generally made of (synthetic) rubber with added carbon black and foamed rubber. For the 2024 fall edition of Maison&Objet (4-8 September 2024), Hong Kong-based architectural studio @LAABpro designed a pavilion consisting of 3D printed bricks, which are made or recycled water bottles. Researchers at @Umass, USA, developed a chalk-based coating that cools the air underneath treated fabric. In the sunlight, your body and clothing absorb ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (near-IR) light, warming you up. In addition to your own body heat, this can lead to uncomfortably warm temperatures fast.
