Designer @SamerSelbak designed a pendant light and a room divider made of two fundamentally different materials: steel and luffa. Called the Luffa Project, it centres around the luffa plant. The fruit of this plant from the pumpkin, squash and gourd family can be eaten when young. However, it becomes too fibrous when it matures, making it suitable for its best-known use: a scrubbing sponge. Selbak used luffa to create two objects, combining the material with steel, “to linger on the tension between the controlled and geometric presence of man-manufactured-materials and the unpredictable and wild qualities of the organic material”. Clothing brand @Outerknown created a limited-edition shirt made in part of seaweed. The unisex shirt has the same design as Outerknown signature Blanket Shirt, which is usually made of only cotton. The limited-edition version, however, is made with a blend of 70 per cent Regenerative Organic Certified Cotton and 30 per cent Kelsun, which is made with seaweed. For her master thesis at TU Berlin, @victoria.roznowski used computational design to optimise 3D printed clay façade bricks with enhanced thermal properties and integrated greenery. Called Brick By Bit, the project consists of various types of interlocking clay bricks. The bricks were designed using the finite element method (FEM), a method used to numerically solve different equations arising in engineering and mathematical modelling, in this case heat transfer. The method was used to decide on the best pattern to minimise thermal loss. This pattern was enhanced with additional insulation to meet the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) requirement of a U-value below 0.24.
