Dutch design studio Atelier LVDW designed a room divider, or wall object, made of wood and the studio’s eggshell ceramic material.

Atelier LVDW’s eggshell ceramic material, which you can find in our collection here, is, as the name indicates, a ceramic material made of eggshells. In the Netherlands alone, 10 billion eggs are produced annually. Eggshells are often discarded. However, due to the high amount of calcium carbonate, the eggshell can be used as a soil improver.

Atelier LVDW developed a biodegradable but strong material out of the eggshells. It has the look of ceramics, but can be composted at the end of its lifespan.

Called Meraki, the room divider was inspired by fungus growing on old wood. The base is made of European Douglas fir wood and coloured with linseed oil. The object is completely modular and can be assembled or disassembled easily. Thus, the product can be shipped in a small box. At end-of-life- the eggshell ceramic elements can be put in the compost bin.
