A ‘spray-on’ shoe
Swiss shoe brand On developed a trainer that has an upper made of a sprayable material.
Called Cloudboom Strike LS, the shoe is the first trainer by On using the new technology, dubbed LightSpray. The shoe is made by fusing 1.5 km of thermoplastic filament in a complex pattern onto a high-performance, computer-optimised racing sole. The spray, operated by a robot, creates a non-woven upper, that is designed to feel like a second skin. This process only takes three minutes.
The upper does not require glues and has no seams. The sole is made of Helion HF hyper foam, which is made of 40 per cent biobased ingredients.
The result is a very lightweight shoe, as the upper only weighs 30 grams. The shoe in total weighs 170 grams. The company says to reduce carbon emissions up to 75 per cent compared to conventional trainers.
