A stool made of carton-pierre

Design studio Studio Jean Louis Noël used a traditional technique called carton-pierre to create a stool.

Called Pitilde, the stool is the result of the studio’s research into the potential of carton-pierre, a traditional paper-based material. The material was used around 1900 to make ornaments for ceilings. It is similar papier-mâché (paper mixed with glue). However, to improve the strength, lime and sand are also added, which results in a material that can be processed like wood.

For their project, the studio rejuvenated the old craft and gave it a contemporary spin. The stool has an arch-shaped minimalistic design. Using the same material, Studio Jean Louis Noël also created other furniture pieces, including a stackable storage device inspired by dry stone walls, rock-shaped stools, benches, and a chair.
