A table made of denim

Designed by Blacktail Studio, the Damascus Denim table is made from denim fabric infused with epoxy.

The name of the table derives from Damascus steel, a tough type of material with a distinctive pattern because the metal is folded over itself a number of times. A similar pattern emerges in the Damascus Denim table, which are not painted or printed on. Instead, you see the actual layers of denim.

Made of 100 square metres (1000 sq ft) of denim, the table is made by layering 50 layers of fabric on top of randomly sawn pieces of plywood, to create bumps in various shapes and sizes. The denim was then bonded with epoxy and pressed in a vacuum bag. The resulting tabletop is sturdy and has a warm, wood-like feel.

Finally, to reveal the Damascus-like pattern, the bumps were sanded off to create a flat surface. The tabletop was mounted on a white oak frame. Below, you can watch ‘The making of’ the first ever Damascus Denim table.
