A woven lighting structure made of birch wood

Dutch designer Rick Tegelaar designed a lighting structure made of birch wood laminate and brass wires.

Called Tabby, after a simple type of weave, the illuminated structure weaves together birch strips and brass wires in a tight modular grid. The birch strips consist of a 3-ply lamination, and are treated with natural oils to make them flexible, strong, and resistant to stains, moisture, and discolouration. The solid brass frame ensures the distribution of electricity, but because it is low voltage, the structure is safe to the touch.

The lighting in Tabby is provided by custom-developed polycarbonate LED lights. The modular design of the structure allows for customisation to any size.
