AGNI: A Modular Seating System Based on Moulded Wood Production
French industrial designer José Cabrita has developed AGNI, a modular seating and furniture system for the brand CONTEXTE. The collection is based on moulded plywood techniques and offers a practical and durable solution for a wide range of interiors.
A Flexible System for Contemporary Interiors
The AGNI system uses plywood elements made from beech or oak. Each piece can function as a bench, stool, table or shelving unit, depending on how it is placed. The catalogue shows two bench lengths, 120 cm and 160 cm, which makes it easier to use the system in both small and large spaces. The deep seat offers comfort for several users. In addition, the bench can be used with or without cushions or tabletops.
Because of this flexibility, the system works in both private homes and public spaces such as offices or waiting areas.
Material Choices and Soft Covers
AGNI includes several cover options. These include woven fabric, felt and vegetable-tanned leather, all produced in France. The fabric is breathable and durable. The felt adds warmth and supports acoustic comfort. Meanwhile, the leather is treated with plant-based tannins. This reduces chemical impact and increases the lifespan of the material. Over time, the leather develops a natural patina.
As a result, users can select a finish that fits their interior and performance needs.
Tabletops and Additional Functions
The system becomes even more versatile with glass or stone tops. These tops include Carrara marble, Marquina marble, travertine and two types of safety glass. Designers can select a full-length top or a smaller version. This makes it possible to combine seating and tabletop functions in one element. Protective glides under the tops help prevent slipping and protect the wood surface.
In addition, many elements include an elastic band. This band offers space for books, magazines or small objects, which supports organisation in compact interiors.
Focus on Local Manufacturing and Longevity
The AGNI collection is designed and produced in France. This supports local craftsmanship and reduces transport impact. Cabrita explains that durability guided the development process. The modular structure, material selection and replaceable components all contribute to a long lifespan.
Therefore, AGNI can serve as a practical and material-driven solution for designers who value flexibility, repairability and long-term use.
