Circular Transformation of De Nieuwe Post in Arnhem
The renovation of De Nieuwe Post in Arnhem has started. The Dutch Central Government Real Estate Agency asked Heijmans to turn the historic post office into a sustainable and future-proof building. More than half of the materials come from reuse or biobased sources. Some are harvested directly from the existing structure. As a result, De Nieuwe Post will become one of the most circular redevelopment projects in the city.
Balancing Heritage and Innovation
The project proves that history and modern design can work together. The original character of the building remains, while new sustainable solutions are added. Circularity plays a central role. For example, steel from the old post office will return in the structure, together with donor steel from earlier projects. Even the interior contributes. Old doors will be transformed into seating furniture and planters.
Building with Nature
Kraaijvanger Architects designed a plan that combines renewable materials with more greenery. The current car park will change into a public inner garden, offering a green retreat in the city centre. In addition, a five-storey timber extension will rise above the existing low wing. This new volume highlights the potential of wood as a renewable construction material.
The project also meets Paris Proof standards, which are the strictest energy efficiency rules in the Netherlands. The building will be completed in early 2027. Afterwards, Heijmans will take care of maintenance for 15 years.
Engaging the Community
Residents also influenced the design. At first, they opposed the permit. However, open dialogue and design changes shifted their view. In the end, the residents’ committee withdrew its objections, calling the plan “too beautiful not to be realised.”
During construction, the focus on community continues. Heijmans organises meetings, shares updates through the BouwApp, and improves liveability with greenery and art. For example, students from ArtEZ University of the Arts will design installations for the site.
Towards a Circular Built Environment
De Nieuwe Post shows what is possible when material reuse, biobased construction, and urban greenery come together. Therefore, the project is not only a renovation but also an example for architects and designers who want to create circular and sustainable buildings.
