Forest Within: A Material-Centred Sanctuary in the Forests of Japan

In the forests of Kitakaruizawa, Japan, design studio Inspatia has imagined Forest Within, a retreat that blends architecture with nature. Rooted in Japanese tradition, the concept offers a calm and thoughtful response to its surroundings. It also showcases how materials can support both environmental goals and a rich spatial experience—making it a strong reference for architects, interior designers, and landscape professionals alike.

Light Footprint, Strong Connection

The retreat sits on slender steel stilts. This simple choice protects the ground below and keeps the building elevated, following the natural slope of the site. As a result, the design avoids major disruption to the land. It also improves airflow beneath the structure and prepares it for changing weather conditions.

The layout forms a Y-shape, with three wings: a living hub, a wellness space, and a sleeping area. At the centre is a round courtyard, designed for reflection and framed views. Each space is connected to nature and clearly defined by its function.

Natural Materials, Local Roots

The project uses materials that are local, recycled, and low-impact. These were selected for their thermal performance, aesthetics, and symbolism. Japanese cypress is used for cladding and interiors. Its light tone and natural scent help create a calm, inviting space. The wood is also durable and suited to the local climate.

Basalt stone, drawn from the region’s volcanic terrain, gives the project a solid, earthy feel. Recycled concrete adds structural strength while reducing environmental impact. Clay roof tiles, common in traditional Japanese homes, help regulate temperature and offer visual continuity. Glass walls wrap the building and bring in daylight, opening views to the forest and reinforcing the connection to nature.

Designed for the Senses

Materials are not just functional—they shape the atmosphere. A wraparound corridor, inspired by the Japanese engawa, links indoors and outdoors. This space changes with the light and seasons, offering subtle shifts in mood and texture.

Inside, each wing has its own feel. The Living Hub includes warm wood, stone, and a sunken hearth that draws people together. The Wellness Retreat features charred timber and dark concrete, adding depth and contrast. In the Sleeping Wing, soft finishes and quiet details support rest and comfort.
