From Rag to Riches: Finarte’s Anniversary Collection Revives a Finnish Textile Heritage
Finnish rug brand Finarte celebrates its 40th anniversary with a new Anniversary Collection that honours Finland’s iconic räsymatto, or rag rug. Handwoven from recycled fabric strips, these rugs reflect a design tradition rooted in craftsmanship and sustainability. What began in the 19th century as a simple household necessity has grown into a symbol of circular design and national identity.
Reimagining a timeless material
Founded in 1985 by textile artist Eija Rasinmäki, Finarte combines Finnish heritage with modern creativity. The Anniversary Collection introduces new pieces such as Iris, inspired by 1930s patterns, alongside Apollo, a revived 1980s classic. Each design bridges past and present, combining tradition with modern sensibility.
Sustainable design with a human touch
Although rag rugs were once woven at home, Finarte now works closely with artisan partners in India. Together, they handcraft each piece using reclaimed materials. Every rug is unique, shaped by the irregular textures of its recycled fabrics.
For architects, interior designers, and product designers, Finarte’s rugs highlight how heritage crafts can inform future design. They combine local identity, tactile beauty, and environmental awareness — proving that true innovation often begins with tradition.
