Mycelium leather used in car interior
Cadillac’s new concept vehicle SOLLEI includes mycelium leather in its interior.
The material in question is MycoWork’s Fine Mycelium. The material is made of mycelium, the root system of mushrooms, which is grown in such a way that it functions as a leather alternative. The process uses ingredients made from biobased substances, such as wheat bran, water, and repurposed sawdust.
Before the car, Cadillac designed a card holder accessory incorporating this material, to serve as proof of concept of its versatility. This was the first time Fine Mycelium was used in the automotive industry.
Now, Cadillac introduced the material in their new concept car, SOLLEI, an all-electric 2+2 convertible. Fine Mycelium is used in the charging mats on the console and the door map pockets, so not a lot of it is used. For the most part, the car interior still uses traditional Nappa leather.
