Ressence Watch Features Real Desert Sand in Its Dial

Belgian watchmaker Ressence has launched the limited-edition TYPE 9 S75 to mark the 75th anniversary of luxury retailer Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. The watch is notable for its use of real desert sand from the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), which forms part of its functional dial. This edition combines regional materials with minimalist design, offering insights for designers working with natural and locally sourced materials.

Sand as a Visible Material

The dial contains refined sand collected from the U.A.E. desert. This sand is applied to titanium discs that display the hours and minutes. It also adds visual texture and tactile contrast.

The TYPE 9 S75 measures 39mm in diameter and weighs only 40 grams. Its display is limited to hours and minutes. By simplifying the interface, the design gives full attention to the materials and surfaces. This approach can inspire interior and product designers who want to reduce complexity and highlight texture and finish.

Camel Leather Strap with Local Significance

The strap is made from naturally tanned camel leather. This leather is sourced from the region and offers durability and character. Its use ties the product to its geographical context.

A Continued Exploration of Local Design

This model builds on Ressence’s earlier collaborations with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. Past editions—like the TYPE 1 DXB and TYPE 1°DX3—have also focused on regional influences. These projects show how design partnerships can spotlight local materials in global product categories.

Design Relevance Across Disciplines

The TYPE 9 S75 is relevant for professionals in product, interior, and packaging design. It demonstrates how local materials like sand and camel leather can be used in refined, modern designs. The watch shows that sustainability, storytelling, and function can work together in a single object.
