Salt-block spa
Salt bricks have healing properties and can be used for construction too. They are gaining popularity in modern environments for living and relaxation. Blocks made from salt are aesthetically rich and pleasing to the senses, and are commonly used in saunas, particularly within traditional Korean saunas.
The bricks used are cut from pure crystal seams found in the Himalayas. When cut, the salt bricks are semi-translucent and range in colour from very light pink to deep orange and red. But it is the mineral composition of these blocks that really make them unique as building materials. Salt is a natural ionizer which means that as a material, it fosters the exchange of negative ions, or anions.
When used in an interior environment, the salt blocks therefore lead to ion exchange, which helps to clean the surrounding air as well as create a bacteria-free environment.
Looking to different locations for inspiration is a continual source of inspiration to architects. In this case we look to Korea, which has a rich spa and sauna tradition. The traditional Korean combination, a bathhouse known as a jimjilbang, is part of a national culture that arose before domestic plumbing was common. Nowadays, they are as popular as ever – both in Korea and abroad – due to their popular beauty treatments, relaxed social environment and luxurious interiors.
Many modern saunas create sensuous saunas and spa rooms by embracing traditional use of materials such as jade, gold, yellow-earth and, of course, salt. In fact, Himalayan salt saunas are a central feature in jimjilbangs.
Salt bricks are brick shaved and produced in standard dimensions (25×12,5×2,5cm or 20x10x5cm). Walls constructed with them are both colourful and shimmering and they create a soothing atmosphere. Additionally, the metals and minerals in the blocks help relieve allergies and asthma, soften the skin, and reduce signs of aging. The result is a great looking environment that helps you feel good, too.
