Smart Shielding: A Space-Grade Jacket that Blocks Radiation and Infrared Detection
Vollebak’s Shielding Jacket brings space-grade technology into everyday design. Originally developed to protect NASA’s Mars Rover from electromagnetic interference, this high-tech material is now used to shield the human body. The result is a jacket that offers digital protection, thermal camouflage, and antibacterial performance—ideal for designers exploring future-focused fashion and functional textiles.
Shielding Against Digital Signals
The jacket, which is accompanied by matching trousers, uses fabric from Shieldex in Germany, made from 83% polyamide and 17% silver. Unlike coatings that wear off, the silver is woven directly into the fibres. As a result, it stays effective and strong. The silver reflects electromagnetic radiation from 0.2GHz to 10GHz, covering WiFi, Bluetooth, radar, and satellite signals. This makes the jacket a practical example of how materials can enhance privacy in connected environments.
Invisible to Infrared Cameras
In addition to blocking digital signals, the clothing reflects mid- and long-wave infrared radiation. This means infrared cameras can’t easily detect the wearer’s body heat. Designers working with privacy-focused fashion, military gear, or responsive clothing can use this as inspiration for thermally adaptive materials.
Natural Antibacterial Action
Silver doesn’t just shield against signals—it also protects against germs. The ions in silver attack bacteria by breaking down their membranes and DNA, preventing them from multiplying. This built-in hygiene makes the jacket especially useful for urban travelers and health-conscious users. It also demonstrates how antimicrobial textiles can reduce the need for frequent washing.
Built for Cybersecurity
The jacket includes a Faraday cage pocket that blocks all wireless signals to and from your phone, even when it’s turned off. A second pocket inside the right side provides extra protection. These features offer valuable insight for designers of wearable tech, protective gear, and secure product packaging.
Lightweight and Durable
Despite its high-tech functions, the jacket weighs only 400 grams. The outer layer weighs just 42g/m² and the lining 65g/m², keeping the garment light and comfortable. It’s constructed in Italy using high-performance materials from across Europe.
A Material for the Future
As designers face growing challenges around digital exposure, privacy, and hygiene, materials like these offer real solutions. The Shielding Jacket shows how performance, comfort, and innovation can come together in one product. This makes it especially relevant for professionals in fashion design, smart textiles, and product innovation.
