The Office Walker: A Manual, Energy-Free Walking Pad for Modern Workspaces
The Office Walker, created by Berlin-based designer and physicist Johannes Kettmann, introduces a new approach to movement in the workplace. Unlike electric walking pads, it works without a motor, and it is made of wood. The user’s own steps power the device, eliminating noise, electricity use, and mechanical wear. This makes it a quiet, low-maintenance alternative to conventional treadmills.
Compact and Adaptable Design
At around 25 kilograms, the Office Walker is light enough to move easily. Integrated wheels allow users to roll it into position or store it upright when not in use. Because it measures only 14 centimetres in height, it fits under most standing desks. As a result, it can be used in home offices, shared workspaces, and compact studio environments. Its clean, minimal appearance helps it blend with different interior styles.
Built for Longevity and Simple Repair
Durability plays a central role in the design. The walking surface features modular “soft-touch” slats that can be replaced individually. This allows for quick repairs and offers the option to choose between different surface textures in the future. There is also an all-wooden version available. In addition, the structure can be disassembled using basic tools, making maintenance straightforward. These features align with growing design trends towards repairability and long-lasting products.
Sustainable Material Choices
The Office Walker uses wood for its side panels and mechanically fastened plastic components that can be separated for recycling. By excluding electronic parts, the product avoids energy consumption and reduces electronic waste. Its mechanical system supports a longer lifecycle and a smaller environmental footprint, combining functional design with sustainable practice.
Encouraging Everyday Movement
Spending long hours seated can lead to stiffness and reduced focus. Walking gently while working helps the body stay active and the mind alert. Because the Office Walker moves only when the user does, it allows a natural rhythm between sitting, standing, and walking. This flexibility makes it easier to include movement in daily routines without extra equipment or power use.
