Transforming Fabric Waste into Sculptural Outdoor Furniture
Italian brand Paola Lenti has introduced Hana-Arashi (Flower Storm), a furniture collection designed by nendo, which repurposes production waste into sculptural outdoor furniture. The collection utilises 100% polypropylene mesh fabric, a durable, water-resistant, and recyclable mono-material available in approximately 180 colour variations.
Heat-Activated Bonding Process
The Hana-Arashi collection employs a technique that leverages polypropylene’s low melting point to bond fabric offcuts without the use of sewing threads or adhesives. A high-frequency thermocompression process is used to fuse layers of fabric, with controlled temperature and heating time reinforcing selected sections while maintaining light permeability in others. This method enhances structural integrity while introducing visual translucency.
By fine-tuning the heating process, specific sections of the mesh harden, increasing durability while retaining a smooth texture. This technique enables the creation of three-dimensional forms without compromising the recyclability of the material.
Sustainability and Production Process
The production begins by assembling large scrap mesh pieces into a base structure. Smaller pieces, cut into uniform shapes, are then thermally bonded to this base, strengthening the surface while incorporating blank embossing to allow light to pass through. Finally, the structure is rolled and fused at the edges, resulting in a sculptural, multi-layered form.
The Hana-Arashi collection is characterised by its organic, unpredictable compositions, as differently coloured remnants merge to create unique patterns. This visual effect is reminiscent of flower petals drifting in the wind, inspiring the collection’s name.
Application in Public and Private Spaces
The collection is suited to public spaces, parks, community areas, and children’s play zones. Its extensive colour range allows for customisable designs, contributing to engaging and interactive environments. The furniture’s lightweight yet durable nature ensures longevity while maintaining an artistic presence.
Circular Design Approach
By employing a single method—high-frequency thermocompression bonding—throughout production, Paola Lenti and nendo have successfully transformed manufacturing waste into functional outdoor furniture. The process enhances strength and translucency while preserving the material’s recyclability.
This initiative aligns with the increasing demand for sustainable material solutions, highlighting how design can repurpose waste into high-quality, functional products while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
