An Edible Mission envisions a future in which nothing goes to waste—not even packaging.

Edible. Nutritious. Circular. Designed by nature, consumed by humans, and returned to the Earth. Within this project, Andrea Brittnek DLA and Kata Lagzi combine algae-based films with mycelium packaging to create aesthetic and functional objects.

Mycelium & Algae Packaging for Well-being
This project brings together two earlier material developments and integrates them within a broader concept of health and well-being. By combining mycelium sheets with algae films, a new material perspective emerges—one that balances stability with flexibility, and sustainability with nourishment.

Mycelium and agar-based films form both the starting point and the solution. Fungi and algae are ever-present in natural systems, weaving through ecosystems, filling voids, and sustaining the continuity essential to life. They return to nature what they temporarily borrow. In this project, the fusion of these two materials gives rise to objects, packaging solutions, and reliefs that symbolise protection, transparency, and interconnection.

More Than Packaging
The organic surface textures, natural colour tones, and the edibility of the mycelium introduce a new perspective on packaging culture. Beyond contributing to global circular sustainability, this approach also addresses public health considerations. Algae-based films are particularly well suited to complement this organic material.

An Edible Mission aims to develop mycelium packaging that can be safely consumed once the food or product it contains has been used. To ensure the outer surface remains clean and suitable for human consumption, the packaging is protected from external influences by a translucent layer made from red seaweed. This protective layer can be easily removed from the mycelium and is itself edible, nutritious, or compostable.

As researchers, developers, and designers, the team behind An Edible Mission seeks to create products that offer new perspectives for a thriving planet and for humanity’s future, while actively reducing packaging waste.
