A mass timber canopy with 3D printed colourful lights

A group of architecture students from the Canadian University of Calgary completed a 70 feet long mass-timber canopy that includes interactive 3D printed colourful lights made of bioplastic.

The canopy is meant improve the lighting and thus real and perceived safety at a bus stop at night. The structure is made of cantilevered parallel strand lumber beams and plywood, that are installed using sole friction, without the need of permanently altering the existing building. The canopy is designed for longterm outdoor use.

The lights are interactive and respond to pedestrians as they walk underneath. The fixtures are 3D printed with biodegradable and recyclable PLA plastic.
