A chair made with traditional bamboo weaving techniques

Taiwan-based Brian Chang Studio designed a chair made with traditional bamboo weaving techniques that provides a cushioned seat.

The chair combines traditional craftsmanship with modern industry. Called Mua Lau, the chair is named after a traditional Taiwanese snack that is crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. It was designed to provide users with a multi-layered sitting experience, “crisp on the outside and soft on the inside”.

The seat is woven using traditional bamboo weaving techniques, using only 12 long bamboo strips to achieve the required size. The double-tube structure inside the seat cushion simulates the effect of double-layer springs, providing a comfortable sitting experience that is firm yet cushioned.

The legs are made of metal that are bent into shape and manually welded, before given a finish that resembles cast iron.

The design won Silver A’Design Award 2023 in the category Furniture.
