A kitchen made of rattan

Kitchen design company J*GAST designed a kitchen made of Karuun, a material made from rattan.

Rattan is a fast-growing palm, mainly growing in Indonesia. There are over 600 species of rattan in the world. It is a versatile material that can be used, amongst other things, to make furniture. Rattan has a structure that is comparable to a bundle of tubes. Through the capillaries, the palm can transport water up to 200 metres.

Karuun (which you can find in our collection here) uses the capillary structure of rattan and injects them with various bulking agents and dyes, to make the material harder and add colour. The brand offers rattan in various shapes, including veneer, panels, and blocks.

Working with design studio Holzrausch, J*GAST used the Karuun material to design a kitchen, using panels and blocks of the material. They also used a translucent, light- and air permeable version of Karuun, called Shine.
