Japanese design studio We+ designed a portable light fixture made of industrial waste, like fine debris and rubble.

Called Ramli, the lamp is designed to “reconstruct the overly complicated and inappropriate relationship between humans and materials, reimagining waste materials from Tokyo as new vernacular materials.” It is made from waste that is left at industrial recycling plants in Tokyo, after reusable materials have been sorted out. The fine debris and rubble that remains is further crushed, mixed with soil, and applied to the surface of the lighting fixture using plastering techniques.

The aim of the project is to explore new value of waste materials that are difficult to recycle and often send to landfills. The light is commercialized through a collaborative development between the research project “Urban Origin” by we+ and Ambientec.
