A wooden couch, bed, and coffin, all in one

Islandic industrial designer Dögg Guðmundsdóttir designed a wooden couch, that also doubles as a bed, and, once you pass away, your coffin.

Guðmundsdóttir’s inspiration came from Ghana, where they have a special tradition of making coffins, which are sold alongside of handmade beds on the streets. When her mother passed away and the wooden coffin was burned, and she had to buy her father a bed soon after, the two concepts connected.

Material scarcity is becoming more and more of a problem, so combining multiple pieces of ‘furniture’ is a good idea. The resulting couch/bed/coffin is made of wood with cushions with a wool and polyester cover.

“I even think this coffin should not get burned after the funeral,” says Guðmundsdóttir, “but borrowed out through time and years for coming family funerals in the future and therefore burn the body in recyclable paper box. Therefore save the material for even longer time.”
