Hemp-based leather alternative featured in Leica’s latest watch strap

Leica has added a new mechanical watch strap to its premium accessories collection. The strap is made from LOVR, a plant-based circular material developed by the German materials company revoltech. It is now available through Leica’s online store. With this release, Leica links high-end product design to a new generation of bio-based materials.

LOVR comes from European hemp residues combined with plant-based additives. The material contains no plastics, polyurethane or PVC. It is produced locally in Hesse, where both companies are based. This regional approach supports material transparency and reduces transport impact.

Hemp as a high-performance alternative

revoltech designs LOVR to meet the performance standards of premium accessories. Hemp is a low-impact crop. It grows with little water, needs no pesticides and supports soil health. By using hemp residues, the process adds value to an existing agricultural stream while also reducing waste.

The material is fully plant-based and designed for circularity. Its single-layer structure supports recyclability, which helps designers who want to apply circular design strategies. LOVR is also scalable and durable, making it suitable for a wide range of products.

Significance for design disciplines

For designers in fashion, interiors, mobility and consumer goods, LOVR shows how bio-based materials can support high-quality applications. The use of this material in a mechanical watch strap demonstrates that alternatives to leather and synthetics can meet strict durability requirements. As a result, LOVR may also be suitable for upholstery, footwear, automotive interiors and lifestyle products.

The collaboration with Leica marks an important moment for revoltech. According to CEO Lucas Fuhrmann, the partnership shows that new materials can meet demands for quality and longevity.
