Modular nests for wild bees made of cast soil

With the project Nestincity, designer Bracha Haviv creates nesting sites for wild bees made of cast soil, to raise awareness of bee decline in nature.

The population of wild bees, which, other than honey bees for example, often are solitary, are facing many threats, such as competition for resources, habitat loss and pesticides. Yet they are vital to our ecosystem, as much of 70% of the food we consume depends, directly or indirectly, on pollination. In addition, they are fundamental for biodiversity.

The project includes workshops in which participants help make the nests. These are cast using soil in dynamic moulds. In the process, the participants are educated on wild bees. The resulting bee habitats are integrated in community gardens
