Preview: DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR

At DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR  in Shanghai this spring, Materia will be presenting the most advanced and inspiring materials suitable for all kinds of design applications. These materials range from the beautiful, high-tech materials to simple materials in a new application or new production.

DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR focuses on flooring solutions, but the Materia exhibition will cover more. The collection is grouped around three very important themes. These themes are sustainability, health and stone.

Health is of prime importance. The simplest way of providing a healthy environment is by using tried and tested materials. Solid wood is a strong example, with various types contributing in different ways. They can be warm, fragrant, sound absorbing and so on.

Sustainable materials are featuring more and more strongly. The Chinese market is pushing ahead with sustainable design, and this ties in with Materia’s goal of encouraging sustainable material use. Therefore many examples will be on show, from biobased materials to recycled and renewable materials.

Stone is an increasingly interesting area. Recent advances have resulted in high-strength, lightweight varieties. With new cutting techniques, stones can even be an ultrathin veneer of less than 1mm thick. On the other end of the spectrum, there are now even transparent ceramics.

With all these materials, there are advantages to using ‘natural’ materials – easily renewable or grown materials – as well as to ‘minerals’, from concretes to metals. This broad scope is the context of the Materia exhibition.

Find out which materials are in the exclusive Materia exhibition for DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR 2014: visit the show between March 25th and 27th in Shanghai to see how Materia’s selection will help designers create a healthier and more sustainable built future. We will also be posting from the show, so you can follow the proceedings wherever you are.
