Limited edition surfaces created from organic local waste, bringing beauty and sustainability into your spaces.

Orange Peel Waste Tiles transform citrus peel residues into vivid, tactile biomaterials full of texture and visual warmth. Each piece embodies playful variations in color and structure, balancing material experimentation with craftsmanship.

The production process mirrors the studio’s bio–resin composite system: citrus waste is cleaned, dried, ground, and bound with natural resins to form mouldable thermoplastic material. The tiles can be pressed or cast to achieve a range of densities and surface finishes, from matte to glossy.

This method maintains a closed-loop, low-emission process, turning organic by-products into expressive, functional surfaces.

Designed for interior wall panels, sculptural installations, or small objects, the material highlights the studio’s philosophy that waste can become a source of beauty, storytelling, and renewal.

Key Properties

  • Locally sourced citrus residues
  • Biodegradable and low-emission – Thermoplastic and reformable
  • Handcrafted, colour-variant texture – Customizable finish and thickness

Waste Matters Studio positions materials as narratives — tangible expressions of locality, ecology, and transformation. Through circular processes and biomaterial innovation, the studio creates surfaces that merge sustainability with contemporary design aesthetics.

Waste Matters Studio is a material design practice transforming local organic waste into innovative biomaterials and handcrafted surfaces. Founded by designer and researcher Austėja Platūkytė, the studio explores the intersection of circular design, material experimentation, and craftsmanship, aiming to redefine waste as a valuable material resource.

Working directly with local cafés, restaurants, and food producers, Waste Matters Studio collects organic residues such as coffee grounds and fruit peels. These by-products are cleaned, dried, ground, and transformed into bio–resin–based thermoplastic composites. Each material is developed and produced in-house, ensuring aesthetic uniqueness, durability, and transparency across all stages — from waste collection to final application.

The studio’s vision is to create materials that express a new material culture, where sustainability, locality, and tactile quality coexist.
