A BLUNT STORY has developed UNCRUDE®, a proprietary sole technology designed to reduce the environmental impact of footwear. Conventional footwear soles are typically made from petroleum-derived materials such as EVA, TPU and synthetic rubbers. These materials can shed microplastics during use and persist in the environment for extended periods after disposal.
UNCRUDE® replaces crude oil–based plastics, resins and synthetic rubbers with renewable, plant-based inputs. The system consists of a plastic-free outsole and a predominantly plant-based midsole (footbed), developed to integrate into existing footwear production processes.
The UNCRUDE® outsole contains approximately 70% biobased content and incorporates regenerative materials, including agricultural waste streams. By substituting petroleum-based components with renewable alternatives, the outsole is reported to reduce estimated carbon emissions by more than half compared to conventional variants. The material has been tested for flexibility and durability and is designed to be recyclable.
The UNCRUDE® midsole (footbed) contains approximately 94% plant-based content. It combines renewable plant-based oils and materials with carbon-sequestering inputs such as cork. The formulation avoids petroleum-based foams and is described as free from nitrosamines and other hazardous additives. Estimated carbon emissions are reported to be up to 70% lower than those associated with conventional PU or EVA midsoles. The midsole is also designed with recyclability in mind.
By focusing on biobased content, reduced carbon intensity and material circularity, UNCRUDE® aims to offer a lower-impact alternative to conventional footwear sole systems while maintaining performance requirements for durability and comfort.
