Adhesion Linear Drain: Innovation in Design and Material Engineering

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 4 Dec 2024 · 2 min read

The Adhesion linear drain is a new product developed through a collaboration between Infinity Drain, a manufacturer specialising in architectural drainage systems, and Gensler, a global architecture and design firm. This product is designed to combine functional performance with an innovative approach to aesthetics, inspired by the science of adhesion.

Design Concept and Development
The Adhesion drain features a pattern influenced by the natural behaviour of water droplets adhering to surfaces. To develop this design, the Gensler team conducted experiments by pouring water onto high-end materials and studying how droplets interacted with these surfaces. The resulting pattern showcases irregularly distributed, connected circular shapes, which maintain a sense of randomness while avoiding repetitive visuals often associated with tiled patterns.

According to Gensler, the design is intended to balance familiarity with modernity. The curved cutouts in the steel surface reflect light, mimicking the shimmering effect of water droplets, which adds depth to the product’s visual appeal.

Material and Functionality
The Adhesion linear drain is constructed from stainless steel, chosen for its durability, corrosion resistance, and recyclability. The material aligns with principles of sustainability and circular design, as stainless steel can be repurposed at the end of its lifecycle.

The product is available in several configurations, including site-sizable and fixed-length options, to suit a variety of installation needs. It is compatible with Schluter®-KERDI waterproofing systems, enhancing its functionality in both residential and commercial applications. The precise spacing of the pattern is designed to optimise water flow while maintaining an unobtrusive presence in the space.

Applications in Design
The drain is aimed at professionals in architecture and interior design, particularly those working on hospitality and residential projects. Its adaptability allows it to be integrated into barrier-free bathroom designs, which are increasingly prioritised for accessibility and modernity.

Infinity Drain highlights the product’s ability to merge design and engineering, offering a solution that blends seamlessly into interiors while providing a striking visual feature. Gensler emphasises the collaborative process behind the product, which relied on combining their design expertise with Infinity Drain’s manufacturing capabilities.

Sustainability Considerations
The use of stainless steel not only enhances the product’s durability but also contributes to its sustainability credentials. As a recyclable material, it supports circular design practices, aligning with industry trends toward reducing material waste and environmental impact.

By creating a product that focuses on both functional performance and aesthetic innovation, the Adhesion drain reflects a broader move in the design industry toward materials that combine technical excellence with environmental responsibility.

The Adhesion linear drain is a product designed for modern interior spaces, offering a unique blend of material innovation, functionality, and visual appeal. Its introduction highlights the potential for collaboration between design and manufacturing to produce solutions that are both practical and progressive.
