IKEA 10 + 1 = MATERIAL SUSTAINABILITY

In this design series, Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Ina Klepper looks to solve the problem of unrecyclable ceramics – which have no second life once fired – in order to produce more with less material.

During an internship at IKEA, Ina investigated adding IKEA’s textile waste to clay. The resulting mixture was found to yield 11 bowls instead of 10. The added textile pulp also not only makes the resulting ceramic design more lightweight, but also leave a remindful mark in the ceramic itself, with more texture and a touch of transparency.

To complete the cycle of sustainability and pass the initiative forward, Ina suggests that money IKEA is able to save with this method be passed on to support IKEA’s Social Entrepreneurship programs in developing countries.
