LocTote anti-theft bag is made from slash-resistant fabric

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 2 Nov 2017 · 2 min read

We all have that moment in which we wonder if we can leave our stuff for a second in a public place. Will it still be there when we return? The company LocTote created what is in essence a portable safe, in the shape of a drawstring backpack. The fabric is woven from blend of high molecular weight polyethylene and other fibres, and is 5 times more cut-resistant than Kevlar.

Both the fabric and the drawstrings are water-resistant and cut-proof. The fabric is made of a blend of high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE) and other fibres that are almost impossible to cut through. The drawstring consists or military grade tubular nylon webbing and has a 49-strand stainless steel aircraft cable inside. The bag comes with a heavy-duty brass lock, to prevent thieves from simply opening the bag.

LocTote admits that no fabric is completely cut-proof, as you wouldn’t be able to make anything with it. Their material is the closest as you get to slash-proof, though, without using extreme force or heavy tools.

While extremely durable, LocTote claims the fabric is still soft and supple enough to be used as a pillow.

The sack comes in three variations: original, sport, and coalition, the latter of which is “ridiculously tough”, scoring the highest in cut-resistance. The Coalition sack is made of what they call FLAKnit, with a cut-resistance of 9, the maximum on the scale.

As RFID radio transmission technology is becoming increasingly widespread in passports, credit cards, etc., the risks of electronic pick-pocketing are on the rise. Without shielding, unauthorized parties can read the data stored on these items with the aid of an RFID reader, from a distance without any direct physical contact. Each LocTote bag comes with a large water resistant internal pocket lined with a certified RFID blocking material approved by the US Government for effectively shielding all your cards.

In addition, each bag has a water-resistant interior pocket crafted from urethane coated 200-denier nylon, heavy-duty coated-polyester thread, and a colour-matched water-resistant YKK Aquaguard zipper to keep your stuff safe and dry.
