Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma, in collaboration with @dzekdzekdzek, show a ‘raw’ form of linoleum, that is endlessly remoudable. Linoleum is best known as a floor covering material. It is made from solidified linseed oil, which comes from flax. Flax has been a central theme in Meindertsma’s work over the years. In 2012, she purchased the entire harvest of a Dutch flax farmer, with the aim to recreate a once-thriving local ecosystem from flax farm to finished product. French architectural studio Agence TER, @Studio5.5, and lighting designing agency Concepto created lampposts made of reclaimed materials. Called @nutshellcoolers, the cooler is made using coconut husk as insulation, reducing the need for petroleum-based materials. The husk of a coconut it protects the water inside, keeping it cool in the heat and safe when it falls. Researchers at Swiss design school @ECAL_ch designed a series of flat-pack furniture made of a cellulose sponge material, that grows when soaked in water. Called Under Pressure Solutions (UPS), the project imagines a lightweight furniture system made of a biobased and biodegradable material. The sponge material is made of wood offcuts. It gains it strength from the cellulose fibres that reinforce the tree.
