Verneo HPL: Biobased Innovation for Interior Design

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 10 Jun 2025 · 2 min read

Unilin Panels has launched Verneo HPL, a new High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) designed for interior applications, furniture, and product design. This laminate features a core made from 88% renewable materials, using kraft paper combined with a 100% biobased resin. Compared to conventional fossil-based adhesives, the biobased resin used in Verneo HPL reduces CO₂ emissions by 67%.

Importantly, Verneo HPL offers the same durability, aesthetics, and performance as standard HPL. Designers can create interiors that are both sustainable and high-performing. The first collection of Verneo HPL will soon be available in the Dutch market.

From Fossil-Based to Biobased Resins

Traditional HPL often relies on phenolic resins made from fossil fuels. Verneo HPL changes this. Its core is made with a fully biobased resin, which means no fossil components are used in the kraft paper core. This shift increases the biobased content from 57% in regular HPL to 88% in Verneo HPL. It is a significant step in reducing the carbon footprint of interior materials.

Performance Without Compromise

Despite its biobased core, Verneo HPL maintains the same decorative top layer as conventional HPL. This ensures that designers can continue to rely on the familiar visual quality, durability, and resistance to wear. Verneo HPL makes it possible to specify a low-carbon, biobased product without sacrificing design freedom or technical performance.

A Step Towards Circular Design

The innovation behind Verneo HPL is not limited to laminate. Unilin Panels is also exploring ways to use the same biobased resin technology for the production of biobased chipboards. This approach supports the transition to circular and sustainable material use.

Unilin Panels has a strong track record in sustainability. In 2024, it became the first company worldwide to achieve Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze V4.0 for its entire HPL collection, including the Master Oak range. This certification evaluates material health, circularity, water stewardship, climate impact, and social fairness.

Supporting a Sustainable Future

Verneo HPL is part of Unilin Panels’ wider sustainability strategy. The focus is on healthier environments, better living spaces, and safe workplaces. For interior designers, furniture makers, and product designers, Verneo HPL offers a biobased, low-carbon solution. It allows them to create visually appealing and durable interiors while reducing their environmental impact.
