LIGNIFY® is a plant-based leather alternative made primarily from lignin, a natural polymer that is generated as a by-product of the paper industry. By converting this underutilised industrial side stream into a functional surface material, LIGNIFY offers an alternative to conventional leather and synthetic leather-like materials for a wide range of applications.

Lignin is one of the main structural components of plant cell walls, accounting for approximately 30% of their composition and providing rigidity and strength. Although it is produced in large quantities during paper manufacturing, much of this material remains underutilised. LIGNIFY transforms this renewable by-product into an animal-free material designed for use in products requiring both durability and aesthetic quality.

The material combines biobased content with a range of technical properties, including flame retardancy, antibacterial performance, UV absorbency and durability. These characteristics make it suitable for applications where long-term performance and resistance to wear are important. Depending on project requirements, the material can be incorporated into products across multiple sectors.

LIGNIFY is intended for use in fashion, footwear, accessories and bookbinding, as well as upholstery and interior design. In addition, the material has potential applications in the automotive, marine, aviation, motorcycle and bicycle industries, along with packaging and pet accessories.
