Sea Silt Ceramics is a material innovation developed by design studio Humade that transforms excess marine silt from the Eems-Dollard estuary into a raw material for ceramic products. By replacing part of the virgin clay traditionally used in ceramics, the project establishes a circular production chain that combines sustainable material sourcing with ecological restoration.

The Eems-Dollard estuary experiences a substantial annual surplus of sediment, with approximately one million tonnes of silt requiring removal each year to maintain the ecological balance of the area. Sea Silt Ceramics repurposes this dredged material as a feedstock for ceramic bodies and glazes, creating value from a local residual stream while contributing to biodiversity restoration in the estuary.

Developed in collaboration with Koninklijke Tichelaar, Groningen Seaports and Deltares, the project focuses on creating a stable, scalable and certifiable manufacturing process for architectural and design ceramics. Current material formulations incorporate at least 70% marine silt, significantly reducing the demand for primary ceramic raw materials.

Since its inception in 2020, the project has resulted in the development of more than 400 ceramic body formulations and 350 glaze compositions. The material is suitable for a range of ceramic manufacturing techniques, including extrusion, pressing, casting and 3D printing, enabling applications from ceramic design objects to modular façade systems and architectural building products.

The use of locally sourced marine silt contributes to lower transport requirements, while the developed ceramic recipes are designed to fire at reduced temperatures compared with conventional ceramic products, resulting in lower energy consumption during production.

Sea Silt Ceramics illustrates how regional waste streams can be integrated into the ceramic industry through a circular production model. By combining material innovation with environmental restoration, the project demonstrates the potential for marine sediment to become a valuable resource for architectural ceramics and sustainable construction applications.
