Woola develops protective postal packaging made from waste sheep wool as an alternative to conventional plastic bubble wrap. The material is designed to protect fragile products during transport and is used by e-commerce and luxury retailers across sectors including cosmetics and skincare, eyewear, jewellery and watches, luxury goods, small electronics and supplements.

The packaging is produced using wool that would otherwise be discarded. Each year, an estimated 200,000 tonnes of sheep wool in Europe remains unused due to limited market demand and low economic value. By repurposing this by-product, Woola aims to reduce reliance on petroleum-based plastics while creating a use for an underutilised natural resource.

Wool has inherent material properties that make it suitable for protective packaging. The fibre is elastic and resilient, allowing it to absorb shocks and provide cushioning. It is naturally water-repellent and performs well under varying temperature conditions, helping to protect products during storage and transport. Combined with paper, the wool-based structure forms a lightweight yet protective packaging solution.

The packaging is designed to be durable and reusable, enabling multiple use cycles. Woola is working towards a circular supply chain in which the material remains in use for as long as possible, with options for reuse, repurposing or return at the end of its service life. This approach aims to minimise waste and reduce the environmental impact associated with single-use packaging.
