A Silver-Enhanced T-Shirt With Electromagnetic Shielding Properties
Innovation-focused clothing brand Vollebak has introduced the Shielding T-Shirt, a garment designed to reduce exposure to electromagnetic radiation from devices such as smartphones, Wi-Fi routers and Bluetooth-enabled products. The project demonstrates how advanced material technologies developed for specialist industries are increasingly being adapted for everyday applications.
The concept originates from electromagnetic shielding systems used in aerospace testing facilities. Engineers use these systems to protect sensitive equipment from external electromagnetic interference during spacecraft testing.
Conductive Silver Fibres Integrated Into The Fabric
Vollebak manufactures the T-shirt from a blend of 69% modal, 26% polyamide and 5% elastane. The company integrates silver-plated polyamide yarns throughout the fabric, creating a flexible conductive network within the textile.
According to Vollebak, laboratory tests show shielding effectiveness across frequencies between 30 MHz and 10 GHz. This range covers many of the communication bands used by mobile networks, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies. Depending on the frequency, the material achieves attenuation levels of approximately 10–34 dB.
The silver fibres provide additional functional benefits. Besides interacting with electromagnetic energy, they help prevent static build-up and inhibit the growth of odour-causing bacteria. As a result, the garment can remain fresh for longer and may require less frequent washing.
Biobased Comfort Meets Technical Performance
The fabric combines technical functionality with wearer comfort. Modal, the primary fibre in the blend, is a regenerated cellulose material derived from beech wood pulp. The fibre offers a soft touch, effective moisture management and high absorbency. It can absorb significantly more moisture than conventional cotton while maintaining a smooth surface and comfortable feel.
Polyamide improves tensile strength and abrasion resistance, helping the garment maintain its appearance over time. Elastane adds flexibility and stretch, allowing the fabric to move naturally with the body.
Vollebak has also incorporated several design features to improve comfort. Offset side seams help reduce irritation, while reinforced shoulder seams support long-term shape retention.
Exploring The Future Of Functional Textiles
The Shielding T-Shirt reflects a broader trend towards multifunctional textiles that combine comfort, durability and advanced performance. Conductive fabrics are attracting growing interest in sectors ranging from wearable technology and healthcare to aerospace and protective clothing.
By combining regenerated cellulose fibres with silver-based conductive technology, Vollebak demonstrates how material innovation can expand the role of textiles beyond conventional apparel. The project highlights the potential of advanced fabrics to deliver multiple performance benefits while remaining suitable for everyday use.
