A wooden folding façade

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 29 Aug 2024 · 1 min read

Czech architectural studio Byró Architekti designed a small wooden garden pavilion with a blackened wood façade that can be folded open.

Called simply Garden Pavilion, the structure was built on the foundations of an another wooden cabin. It is located at the end of a large garden near the Vltava River.

The pavilion, which is not connected to the grid and powered by solar panels, features a blackened wooden façade, which was charred using the Japanese Yakisugi technique (also sometimes known as Shou Sugi Ban). The front can be folded out sideways to reveal a polycarbonate wall in a wooden frame, which in turn can be folded upwards to open the whole space up. This works by a system of steel cables, pulleys and counterweights and can be managed by one person.

The interior of the cabin is made mainly of wood and plaster.
