
Banana peels are a common organic waste stream, but their material potential often remains unexplored. The research project From Waste to Resource by Kardelen Çakıray investigates how discarded banana peels could serve as a locally available, bio-based resource for circular design. It responds to the environmental impact of linear ‘take-make-dispose’ systems by examining new uses for food waste.
The project centres on the development of an experimental material library. It demonstrates how designers can treat organic residues as material inputs rather than as end-of-life waste. The resulting samples could inform future applications in packaging, product design, textiles, surfaces and interiors.
The production process begins by drying, grinding, sieving and boiling the banana peels. These treatments create three base ingredients: a fine banana peel powder, a swollen sponge-like pulp and a yellow liquid extract infused with components from the peels.
The researchers combine these ingredients with a range of natural binders and additives. These include agar, kappa carrageenan, sodium alginate, corn starch, inulin and white kaolin clay. Calcium chloride and vegetable glycerine also help modify the properties of selected formulations.
Systematic experimentation produces samples with different colours, textures, structures and behaviours. Depending on the recipe and processing method, the banana waste can form flexible films, sponge-like materials or more rigid composites. The project documents and classifies these samples according to their physical and visual qualities.
The diversity of the samples shows that one organic waste stream can support several material directions. Thin, flexible versions may offer possibilities for experimental packaging or textile-related development. Meanwhile, firmer composites could provide a starting point for biobased products and decorative interior surfaces.
However, the materials remain at an experimental stage. Further research must examine their durability, moisture resistance, safety, manufacturing requirements and end-of-life options. Researchers also need to optimise the formulations and assess whether production can scale without undermining the environmental advantages of using waste.
By presenting banana peels as a resource, the project illustrates how material-led design research can contribute to circular production models. It also highlights the designer’s role in connecting local waste streams with new material applications.
