Glowing Yeast Workshop Explores Synthetic Biology And Biodesign

LifeFabs Institute in London is inviting the public to explore the science behind genetically modified, fluorescent yeast. The hands-on workshop, titled Brew Your Own Glowing Beer, will take place on 8 August 2026 at the institute’s laboratory in Dalston, East London.
The session introduces participants to genetic engineering, fermentation and synthetic biology. It targets students, designers, researchers, brewers and makers, as well as anyone interested in emerging biological technologies. Participants do not need previous laboratory experience.
Making Yeast Fluorescent
During the workshop, participants will prepare yeast cells for genetic transformation. They will introduce a plasmid containing the genetic instructions for green fluorescent protein (GFP). This protein occurs naturally in the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and emits green light when exposed to particular wavelengths.
Participants will then place the transformed cells on selective agar. This growth medium helps identify cells that have successfully taken up the plasmid. Blue light and a UV filter will reveal whether the yeast produces the fluorescent protein.
Despite the workshop’s title, the central activity concerns the modification and observation of yeast cells rather than conventional beer brewing. The format uses the familiar relationship between yeast and fermentation to make genetic engineering more accessible.
From Fermentation To Biofabrication
Humans have used yeast to make bread and alcoholic drinks for thousands of years. Today, scientists also employ genetically engineered yeast to produce pharmaceuticals, enzymes, chemicals and other biological compounds.
These processes have growing relevance for biodesign and material development. Designers and researchers are exploring microorganisms as production systems for pigments, fibres, polymers and other substances. Workshops such as this can offer an accessible introduction to the laboratory techniques behind such applications.
Digby Usher, Director and Co-Founder of LifeFabs Institute, will lead the session. His practice encompasses biodesign, material innovation, synthetic biology and design education. He has also contributed to the MIT Media Lab’s Synthetic Biology programme in Europe.
An Open-Access Biofabrication Laboratory
Usher founded LifeFabs Institute with Co-Director Charlotte Werth. According to the organisation, it is the UK’s only open-access biofabrication laboratory. It provides laboratory facilities, workshops and collaborative programmes focused on biofabrication, biomaterials, synthetic biology and biodesign.
The institute aims to connect researchers, artists, designers, entrepreneurs and local communities through practical learning and experimentation. It also hosts the How to Grow (Almost) Anything programme developed by the MIT Media Lab.
