Hemp Byproducts Transformed Into High-Performance Biocomposites

Microfactory Venture Platform (MVP) and Canadian hemp producer Legacy Fibers have successfully completed their first production trials using agricultural hemp byproducts. The trials demonstrate how residual fibres from existing hemp processing could become engineered materials for furniture and architectural applications.

From Agricultural Residue To Engineered Material

Legacy Fibers produces hemp for bedding, mats and hempcrete. This process generates byproducts that may otherwise remain underused. During the trials, the partners processed these residual fibres using both MVP’s automated production line and a semi-automated setup.

The resulting biocomposite contains approximately 90–94% hemp material and 6–10% water-based resin. According to MVP, this composition can be adjusted to meet different product and performance requirements.

The trials also test the versatility of MVP’s decentralised Microfactory model. The company designed this modular production system to process locally available resource streams while retaining a consistent manufacturing foundation. ChopValue, MVP’s commercial flagship brand, already applies the model to turn discarded chopsticks into products for interiors and furniture.

Adjustable Density And Performance

Initial laboratory tests indicate that the hemp biocomposite can be produced in several densities. Samples intended for high-performance furniture and semi-structural uses achieved densities above 1,150 kg/m³ and a modulus of elasticity of 15,800 N/mm².

MVP reports that the high-density version can be formed into three-dimensional shapes. This could enable its use in moulded seating, curved furniture components and other products that require both strength and design flexibility.

The partners are also evaluating a lower-density version for non-structural architectural applications. Possible uses include decorative interior products and acoustic panels. By varying the density, composition and manufacturing process, the material could therefore address several functional and aesthetic needs.

Local Production And Additional Value

For Legacy Fibers, the collaboration creates a potential revenue stream from byproducts already generated by its farming and fibre-processing activities. Transforming these residues into commercial products could also support local employment and strengthen the regional hemp-processing economy.

The decentralised approach may reduce the distance between raw material, manufacturing and end use. However, further testing and data collection will be needed to confirm the material’s long-term performance and environmental impact across different applications.

Commercial production is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026. The first deliveries to MVP’s existing customers are expected before the end of the year, followed by wider market availability in 2027.
