Spanish sleep brand KHAMA has developed a modular mattress system that aims to reduce material waste while maintaining long-term comfort. Unlike conventional mattresses, which users often discard as complete products, the design allows individual parts to be replaced or upgraded. This approach can extend the usable life of the mattress and reduce the demand for new raw materials.

Designed For Repair And Renewal

The system consists of separate comfort layers, toppers and covers. Users can renew these parts individually when they become worn, when hygiene requirements change or when different levels of comfort are needed. This means that the mattress can adapt over time without requiring replacement of its complete structure.

For couples, the modular construction also offers the possibility of addressing different comfort preferences within a single sleep system. By treating the mattress as an assembly of replaceable parts, KHAMA applies circular design principles to a product category that is traditionally difficult to repair or update.

Reducing Mattress Waste

Mattresses combine several materials and are often bulky, making their disposal and recycling challenging. Extending their lifespan can therefore play an important role in reducing waste. KHAMA’s design seeks to lower material consumption and associated CO₂ emissions by retaining usable components for longer.

The replaceable cover and upper layers may also support better hygiene. Parts that experience the most contact or wear can be renewed while the remaining components stay in use. However, the environmental impact of the system ultimately depends on factors such as material selection, component durability, transport and the options available for recovering or recycling replaced parts.

Recognition For Circular Design

KHAMA won the Interior & Lifestyle category of the Green Product Award. The jury highlighted the system’s ability to replace or upgrade individual components rather than discard the whole mattress. It also recognised the potential benefits for waste reduction, hygiene and product longevity.
