French slate, a material historically tied to roofing, is undergoing a remarkable transformation, thanks to designer Silas Chermant and his project, Labasso. With over 80% of France’s slate quarries having shut down since the early 20th century due to international competition and the rise of synthetic materials, this initiative brings renewed purpose to an abundant but underutilised resource.

Expanding Slate’s Potential
Labasso explores new applications for slate, introducing it to contemporary design contexts while honouring traditional craftsmanship. “With Labasso, my goal is to transcend slate’s conventional uses by creating prestigious objects that merge heritage techniques with modern aesthetics,” Chermant explains. His focus on sustainability and local development reflects a deep commitment to environmentally conscious design.

The Labasso Collection
At the heart of Labasso is a collection of minimalist, elegant lighting fixtures crafted in collaboration with Ardoisière des Pyrénées, a slate workshop located just five kilometres from the material’s source. This proximity ensures a minimal ecological footprint while emphasising the use of local resources. The designs celebrate slate’s aesthetic and functional qualities, pushing the boundaries of its traditional uses.

“Each piece is inspired by slate’s unique technical and visual properties, as well as the expertise of local slate artisans,” Chermant shares. The result is a series of objects that are not only functional but also serve as a tribute to France’s slate-making heritage.
