RiceTab by BIRDMIND: A Circular Board Material Made from Rice Husk

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 25 Mar 2025 · 2 min read

From 25 to 27 March, Spanish company BIRDMIND will present its new material RiceTab at Construction Week MATCOAM, held at the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM). Developed for applications in interior architecture, furniture, and the contract sector, RiceTab is a panel material made from agricultural waste, specifically rice husk, offering an alternative to conventional wood-based boards.

Circular Design from Agricultural Waste
RiceTab is a board produced from rice husk, an abundant by-product of rice processing. By repurposing this material, BIRDMIND aims to reduce dependence on virgin wood and contribute to waste valorisation in the construction and design industries.

The boards are formaldehyde-free, and feature water-repellent, antifungal, and fire-resistant properties (classified Bs1d0). These characteristics make them suitable for a wide range of indoor applications, including areas where hygiene and fire safety are priorities.

Technical Specifications and Finishing Options
RiceTab panels are available in dimensions of 2710 x 1360 mm, with thickness options of 10, 16, and 19 mm. The surface can be customised using dyes or digital printing, enabling a variety of finishes for different aesthetic and functional requirements in interior design and furniture making.

Applications for Architects and Designers
The material is intended for professionals working in architecture, interior design, and product design, particularly those prioritising sustainability and circularity in material selection. RiceTab offers a bio-based, functional, and visually adaptable alternative to traditional materials for use in the retail, hospitality, residential, and contract sectors.

Alignment with Global Sustainability Initiatives
RiceTab supports the principles of the Canopy Style initiative, which advocates for reducing the use of forest-derived materials and protecting endangered forest ecosystems. By utilising agricultural by-products, BIRDMIND contributes to lowering the environmental impact of material sourcing in the built environment.

Ongoing Material Innovation
Based in Pontevedra, Spain, BIRDMIND is engaged in the development of sustainable materials for the construction and interiors sectors. In addition to RiceTab, the company is researching the use of other waste streams—including mussel shells, brewer’s spent grain, and sunflower seed husks—as potential feedstocks for future circular materials.
