SkilledIn from Studio RAP at MX2016

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 19 Dec 2015 · 1 min read

Developed by Studio RAP, this design is optimized for compressive forces that spring directly from its digital environment and has been translated into unique 225 x 37mm thick wooden elements that are milled in turn with a six-axis industrial robot. The timber elements are secured by means of finger joints with a screw connection. All the triangles have a unique connection, they also are set at a unique angle, so they therefore had to be 3D machined.

This project shows the design freedom and opportunities of applying robotic fabrications on an architectural scale.

Studio RAP is a Dutch architectural design and fabrication studio committed to bringing innovative software solutions and industrial fabrication methods to the construction industry. The relationship between material, process and form is at the centre of architectural production. Through the integration of fabrication parameters in the design process, they are able to optimize the results for performance, cost effectiveness or aesthetic appeal.

You can discover the innovative works of Studio RAP and the unique opportunity to hear them lecture about their work at Material Xperience 2016.
