Tiny Office, Big Impact: A Showcase of Bio-Ecological Architecture

Van Laethem Architecten’s new office, dubbed the “Tiny Office,” is a compact yet efficient space exemplifying bio-ecological design principles.

With a focus on sustainability and reduced environmental impact, the project uses 40 cm thick walls made of hempcrete, finished on the exterior with cedar shingles and brickwork, while the interior showcases untreated hempcrete sealed with linseed oil for a natural look. The structure itself is crafted from untreated pine wood, ensuring a minimal ecological footprint.

Circular materials play a central role, with foam glass granules used for floor insulation, and reclaimed clay for a rammed earth floor that brings warmth and texture. Inside, untreated pine boards form walls and cabinetry, preserving an earthy, ecological ambiance throughout.

In addition to material choices, the design integrates eco-friendly technical solutions. The office shares water reclamation, solar-heated flooring, and a PV installation with the adjacent residence, requiring only minimal additional systems. The result is a tranquil and energy-efficient workspace that embodies Van Laethem Architecten’s commitment to eco-conscious architecture and sustainable materials.
